Food Intolerance Testing
What is a food intolerance?
A food intolerance happens when your body has an abnormal reaction to food(s) that are normally easily digested. Symptoms of a food intolerance vary, but most frequently include:
- Gas
- Bloating
- Constipation or diarreah
- Itchy skin
- Chronic fatigue
- Disturbed sleep
There are many potential reasons for why the intolerance may be happening, but most commonly involve lacking the appropriate enzymes that would allow for normal digestion.
Is there a difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance?
Yes. The symptoms of a food allergy and food intolerance elicit a different physical (immune) response where an allergy symptoms will occur quickly after ingestion and may be quite severe. Allergic reactions could include swelling of the throat and lips, difficulty breathing, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and skin rashes.
Food intolerance symptoms on the other hand may be delayed for several hours or days after eating the offending food, making tracking symptoms to the offending food challenging.
The test
The food intolerance test is a convenient blood test that can be done after speaking with the naturopathic doctor to find out which test is right for you. Options include a 120+ food panel, a 200+ food panel and a vegetarian panel.
