Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine (or naturopathy)  is a form of primary health care that uses natural therapies to promote health and treat disease. As primary health care providers, Naturopathic Doctors are trained in physical and laboratory diagnostics and are trained to provide first contact health services.

Naturopathic Doctors look at each person as an integrative whole, not seeing the person as a set of physical symptoms or as a disease. We look at all aspects of the individual, considering the mental, emotional, social, and environmental aspects to see how each impacts on a person’s health.

Patient education is a vital part of Naturopathic practice, because it leads to good health. In helping patients to better understand their conditions and the available treatment options, Naturopathic Doctors enable their patients to take an active role in their health. Patient education is also a key to prevention. Using simple manageable steps, Naturopathic Doctors can help to reduce the risk of future illness and injuries without further adding to the stress of everyday life.

Naturopathic Therapies

Treatments practiced by Graham Beaton integrate scientific research with traditional healing methods in order to promote health and treat disease. They can be used effectively on their own or as a complement to conventional medicine.

  • Clinical Nutrition: Promotion of health and treatment of disease through diet and nutritional supplementation.
  • Lifestyle Counseling: Working with patients to address all determinants of health, whether they be biological, psychological or social.
  • Asian Medicine: Harmonizing of the body’s or vital force through the use of acupuncture, plant-based remedies and nutrition.
  • Acupuncture: Ancient method of balancing the body’s or vital force by direct stimulation of meridian points with fine sterile needles.
  • Botanical Medicine: Plants and their extracts are used to promote health and alleviate disease.
  • Physical Medicine: A variety of gentle, hands-on techniques used to adjust muscles and joints to improve posture and relieve pain.

Naturopathic Training
Naturopathic Doctors are required to have a minimum of three years premedical studies at a recognized university, followed by four years of full time study at an accredited college of Naturopathic Medicine.

Training includes over 4200 hours of study in basic medical sciences, diagnostic and assessment skills and therapeutic techniques, and a minimum of 1500 hours of clinical internship.

To become licensed to practice in the province of Ontario, graduates must successfully complete two sets of standardized North American examinations, and one set of provincial licensing examinations.

Naturopathic Doctors are regulated by the Province of Ontario through the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy, which is regulated within the Drugless Practitioners Act.
